Queen Elizabeth II was born in 1926 and aged just 26 when she became the Queen of England in 1952 following the death of her father. Despite calls for her to abdicate, she went on to be the ruling monarch for 70 years. She had four children, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Queen Elizabeth II was the head of state of the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth comprises of 54 states, many of which were former British territories and are now republics; only a small number still recognise her as their monarch.
Known for her corgis, Queen Elizabeth II was gifted a Pembroke Welsh corgi on her 18th birthday, which she named Susan. She bred and kept at least one dog from each litter, continuing that line for decades, until the passing of Willow in 2018. She’s also owned dorgis – a cross breed of a corgi and dachshund.
