In The Simpsons universe, Moe Szyslak is the owner of Moe’s Tavern where you’ll, more often than not, find Barney Gumble and Homer.

Voiced by Hank Azaria, Moe is prone is falling victim to Bart’s prank calls. He’s known for being extremely grouchy, unlucky, depressed, and has attempted to take his life of a number of occasions.

Matt Groening based Moe on a former heavyweight boxer, Louis “Red” Deutsch who owned Tube Bar in Jersey City, New Jersey. In the 70s, The BBB (Bum Bar Bastards), John Elmo and Jim Davidson, created a series of prank calls and recorded them. The Tube Bar was a favourite location to call as Red would yell out the ridiculous names they told him before realising it was all a prank.
