These Lava Lamp Tattoos Are Totally Groovy

Also known as an astro lamp, lava lamps were invented in 1963 by Edward Craven Walker, who employed David Genge to develop it.

The lamps are made up of wax inside water, with the electricity powering a heating element which melts the wax thus causing it to rise and create that blobby, lava-like appearance.

When the American rights to the lamps were sold the name changed to lava lite lamp. Lava lamps, to this day, are still made in the original factory in Poole, Dorset (U.K.).

A lava lamp tattoo can be as simple or true to the original, or you have the opportunity to fill the lamp with your “lava” of choice – glitter, kawaii, critters, certain colours to represent a person, place, or memory.

Lava lamps are not as popular or as easily found as they once were, but leading up to their 60th anniversary it’s impressive to think about how they have managed to outlast thousands of other products from the ’60s.
