The Spice Girls were formed in 1994 and their first single, “Wannabe” released in 1996; the song went to the top of the charts in 37 countries.

Emma, Geri, Mel B, Mel C, and Victoria were actually given their nicknames from the Top of the Pops magazine staff. The British and worldwide press adopted the names, and the girls played into the characters of Baby, Ginger, Scary, Sporty, and Posh Spice.

The girl group was not a one-hit wonder – their debut album Spice sold over 20 million copies. 1997 saw the release of the Spice World movie. Geri left the following year, before the remaining Spice Girls went their separate ways after the release of Forever in 2000.

While their second and third albums (Spiceworld and Forever) didn’t sell nearly as well, the Spice Girls had already cemented their status in history with numerous records for an all-female group.

In just four short years, the Spice Girls made a huge cultural impact with their music and “Girl Power” message. They stayed true to themselves behind the scenes, fighting for control of their music and their image.

Since their split, all five have released music, with more success for some compared to others. Victoria went on to work in fashion, and others have built a career as media personalities.
