Released in 1998, the Furby was an instant success with 40 million sold during the first three years. The toys spoke Furbish and could communicate with other Furbies in their own language (called Furbish), then as they ‘aged’ the Furbies replaced Furbish words with English (or the language correlating to their country of sale) phrases.
There were several generations of Furby released over the years, with more features added, along with various lines such as Furby Babies and Furby Friends. There was even a crossover with the Star Wars universe with the Wookie Furby (or Furbacca) release in 2015.
Some of the later generation Furbies connected to an app for an additional method of interaction; apparently the app is no longer available in either the Apple or Google Play stores. It’s been five years since you could purchase a Furby in stores – does that mean Hasbro is planning a future release, or is the Furby a thing of the past?
The Weinstein Company (TWC) revealed in 2016 that they were working on a Furby movie, but we all know what happened with a certain someone there. TWC went bankrupt and their assets were sold to Lantern Entertainment. There’s no information to be found whether when or if they’ll begin production of the project. Despite this drama, would you even want to watch a Furby movie?
2023 marks the 25th anniversary of the Furby, and what better way to celebrate than with a tattoo? These cute tattoos might just convince you to book your next appointment.
