In 1948, Fritos creator, Charles Elmer Coolis invented Cheetos (stylised as Chee-tos until 1998), a crunchy, cheesy snack food.
It wasn’t until 23 years later that Crunchy Cheetos were joined by a new product: Cheetos Puffs. It was 1961 and without the ability to distribute the new addition to the brand, Fritos entered in a joint venture with Lay’s in order to get their product on shelves across the US. The two companies went on to merge into Frito-Lay which is now a division of PepsiCo.
In the early ’90s Flamin’ Hot Cheetos were introduced and became an instant success. The spicy puffs were created by a janitor at a Frito-Lay factory, Richard Montañez. His product proved so successful that he was named Vice President of Multicultural Sales and Community.
There are now over 20 different Cheetos varieties available in North America with billions of dollars worth of the snack foods sold yearly.
Takis were formerly called Taquis and are a rolled corn chip snack inspired by Mexican taquitos. Created by Barcel, the product was launched in Mexico a little over 20 years ago (1999), before hitting the US market in 2006.
There is an extensive list of Takis flavour varieties including hamburger, chorizo, barbecue and chicken fajita. Fuego (hot chili pepper and lime), the purple pack, is the most popular of all.
I love how different each of these pieces are and the creative design concepts behind them. Which one would you get tattooed on you: Cheetos or Takis?
