Next year The Karate Kid will celebrate its 40th anniversary – feeling old now?
Released in June of 1984, The Karate Kid was such a success that the martial arts drama film became a franchise. The original was followed in 1986 and 1989 by Part II and Part III.
The trilogy spawned a 1989 animated television series and the release of two video games.
In 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, Pat Morita returned as Mr Miyagi but the character of Daniel LaRusso was replaced by Julie Pierce (played by future Oscar winner, Hilary Swank).
There was, of course, a remake in 2010 starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, but some may say that it’s best forgotten.
Cobra Kai debuted on YouTube Red in 2018, with some of the original cast returning. The show moved to Netflix for season three, with the streaming service just weeks ago announcing that the show’s been renewed for a sixth and final season.
The Karate Kid is credited with popularising karate in the US – it was almost like Rocky for younger generations. The nostalgia for the original film, and the audience and critic reception to Cobra Kai is proof that The Karate Kid legacy lives on.
I’ve gone through various hashtags on Instagram and crane kicked the crappy tattoos to bring you these gold medal worthy The Karate Kid pieces.
