Unhinged Yet Endearing ‘Uncle Buck’ Tattoos

Written and directed by John Hughes, Uncle Buck was released in August 1989. The film starred a pre-Home Alone Macaulay Culkin and John Candy as a crazy, outcast uncle tasked with caring for his nieces and nephews.

Parents forced to leave their children in the care of their childless, unemployed, and unreliable uncle appeared to be a recipe for disaster – at times it was, but in true John Hughes fashion, it all worked out in the end.

Uncle Buck is equally sad, funny, and heartwarming and boils down to Hughes’ innate ability to develop such realistic characters. The film acts as a reminder of decency, giving people a second chance, and finding a equal level of understanding and respect.

The wedding photo scene always makes me tear up a bit. What is your favourite line or scene from the movie?

1990 and 2016 saw attempts at Uncle Buck television adaptations – both were poorly received and were unable to recreate the movie magic.
