1959 was the year the Troll doll was created by Danish fisherman and woodcutter, Thomas Dam. The toy came into being as Dam couldn’t afford to buy a Christmas gift for his daughter, so he made her something instead. Just a few years later, the toys went into mass production and parents around the world were purchasing Troll dolls for their own children.
Troll dolls were an immediate hit upon their release in the 60s and, every decade since, have enjoyed some form of popularity (and sales success) with each generation. The ’90s even saw two Troll doll cartoon specials, followed by the release of a video game in 1993.
With the 21st century came new fads and trends in children’s toys, but we would see Troll dolls make appearances in all three Toy Story movies and, more recently, in Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2016 DreamWorks gave the dolls a makeover and produced an animated film all about them; Trolls earned close to $350 million at the box office.
The original Troll dolls may not be as popular as they once were, but there’s sure to be plenty of people out there who treasure their Troll collections dearly. Then there are our kind of people – the type who relive happy childhood memories by tattooing them on their skin.
