The rise of social media has meant the world has been introduced to what many Australians have always known: quokkas are so damn adorable!
The first written mention of a quokka was by a Dutch marine in 1658. Their name is derived from a Nyungar word, the language spoken by the Noongar community.
A marsupial in the maerapod family, quokkas are pint-sized when compared to kangaroos and wallabies. Considered a vulnerable species, quokkas are a huge tourist attraction on Western Australia’s Rottnest Island, off coast of Perth. Quokka populations can also be found on Bald Island, and on the mainland in a small region between Albany and Perth.
Having become social media stars in more recent years due to their sweet smiling faces when snapped in selfies, quokkas also appear to becoming popular in tattoo circles. While they’re still far from being as common as other Australian animals, this post may inspire you to get your own tattoo.
