Featuring a star-studded cast including the likes of Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest (Edward Scissorhands), and The Simpsons‘, Hank Azaria, 1996’s The Birdcage is actually an American adaptation/English language remake of La Cage aux Filled, a 1978 Franco-Italian film.
The story follows a Conservative politician, Kevin currently dealing with a huge scandal in his party who travels with his wife to Miami to meet his future son-in-law’s parents. With the media following him, he is completely unaware that the father, Armand is gay and lives with his partner, Albert who performs as Starina at the drag club they own and live above. The situation gets more and more ridiculous as the minutes pass and the lies begin to unravel.
After all is said and done, The Birdcage is meant to be a silly comedy film but still comes across as a reminder that we’re all human and deserve love and respect.
I’m positive that I’ve seen an Armand Goldman tattoo sometime over the years, but I cannot for the life of me find it. Maybe it’s mixed in the tens of thousands of images on my HDD that I’ve yet to catalogue. Until I manage to find it, enjoy these The Birdcage inspired pieces.
