Trigger Warning: References to Drug Use and Sexual Assault.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a 1999 young-adult novel written by Stephen Chbosky. The protagonist, Charlie is a high school freshman, who writes letters to a “dear friend” in order to tell his story.
The heartbreaking tale of a troubled introvert is a relatable tale and reflects so many of us during our high school years. The Perks of Being a Wallflower exposes its audience to serious, real world situations such as death and grief, drug experimentation, and PTSD, along with the emotions behind a person’s first kiss, first crush, and first relationship.
Everyone has their own trauma they’re dealing with, but we’re all yearning for special friendships or relationships with people who truly understand, respect and accept us.
The book was banned in some U.S. schools due to the themes of sexual assault and drug use.
In 2012 the film of the same name was released. Written and directed by the author, it starred Emma Watson, Mae Whitman, Paul Rudd, and Logan Lerman as Charlie.
There are differences between the novel and the film, so if you haven’t yet, we recommend reading and watching both to get the full experience.
You may connect to one or several of the themes which will guide the concept for your own tattoo. Here’s a few The Perks of Being a Wallflower tattoos I could find. Re-read the book or watch the film again and begin to think about how a new tattoo can help you to embrace being a wallflower.
