The Golden Girls was a comedy drama sitcom which centred around three widowers and a divorcee, all living together in Miami. Rose, Blanche, Dorothy and her mother, Sophia were often found sitting around the kitchen table eating cheesecake (or some kind of dessert) and discussing what was troubling them.
The Golden Girls was not just a unique show due to starring older, single women, but it also dealt with some rather serious social issues, all with a healthy dose of comedy; laughter is the best medicine, after all.
The show was incredibly popular during its 180 episode run on television and went on to develop a cult following across several generations thanks to its syndication and reruns. Winner of many Emmys and Golden Globe awards, a staggering 27.2 million people (more than the current population of Australia) watched The Golden Girls series finale in 1992.
It’s actually incredible the amount of spin-offs (and the total number of episodes) were created from The Golden Girls; the show is even more ingrained in the history of television than we first thought:
The Golden Palace was where the ladies (minus Dorothy) purchased a hotel but lasted just one season of 24 episodes;
Empty Nest (1988 – 1995) starred the character of Dr Harry Weston and had a 7 season, 170 episode run;
The show Nurses (1991 – 1994) ran for 3 seasons and comprised of 68 episodes. Nurses was a spin-off of Empty Nest which itself was a spin-off of The Golden Girls – how’s that for some television show inception?
