Jem and the Holograms was an animated series that aired from 1985 to 1988. There were 65 episodes in total across three seasons. The show was produced by the same team behind G.I. Joe and Transformers, with animation provided by the Japanese company, Toei Animation.
The show follows the adventures of Jem and her band, the Holograms. Jem is the singer and alter ego of music company owner, Jessica Benton. Jem keeps her identity secret from everyone but her bandmates and the foster children (referred to as the Starlight Girls) who live with them.
Prior to his death, Jessica’s father developed Synergy, a holographic computer which is “the ultimate audio-visual entertainment synthesizer.” Jem has micro projectors in her earrings which control Synergy and projects a hologram to protect her identity as well as helping to avoid danger.
