Axolotls are often referred to as Mexican walking fish although, despite having gills, they are actually classified as amphibians. Sadly, wild axolotl are considered critically endangered – they only ever existed in two lakes in Mexico and can now only be found in one.
Although not ideal, zoos and aquariums, and those keeping axolotls as pets are helping keep the animal from becoming extinct. In recent years, organisations have begun actively working towards the breeding and conservation of this salamander species.
