In the decade before Chucky’s introduction, the likes of Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger had been terrifying theatre-goers. Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray and then the voice of Chucky introduced a whole new thing for children to fear: their own toys. Chucky’s maniacal laugh and his murderous tendencies gave me nightmares as a child, but the films just wouldn’t be the same without him.

In the almost four decades since Child’s Play theatrical release, the possessed Good Guys doll returned for a further six sequels, the most recent being 2017’s Cult of Chucky. With the Chucky television series recently cancelled after three seasons, Child Play’s creator, Don Mancini has promised to return to the franchise, with a new movie in the works.

If there’s anything scarier than Chucky, it is living with the regret of a bad tattoo.
