No one can quite agree on who coined the name D-Generation X (it was either Vince Russo, a journalist, or Shane McMahon) and many either love or hate the wrestling stable – which side are you on?
The initial group of four formed in late 1997 with DX consisting of Shawn Michaels and his “insurance policy”, Rick Rude, and Hunter Hearst Helmsley and his enforcer, Chyna. They were all about crude humour and having no respect for authority.
Within just months of forming there were majors changes to the stable. Rick Rude left the WWF following the Montreal Screwjob. HBK was subsequently ejected from the group after his loss to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin at WrestleMania XIV – off-screen he retired from wrestling due to a severe back injury sustained months prior during a casket match with The Undertaker at the 1998 Royal Rumble.
This led to Triple H becoming the leader, and then X-Pac and the New Age Outlaws (Billy Gunn and The Road Dogg) joining the group, along with Tori for a short period. As Triple H established his singles career, D-Generation X all but fizzled out by late 2000.
Michaels and Triple H reunited in 2006 to reform DX, teaming together on and off for a further four years. The pair, and other members, have made sporadic appearances for special events in the following years. The stable were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame five years ago.
Are you an old school D-Generation X fan, or were you introduced to them during their mid-2000s run? The 30 year anniversary of DX’s formation is just three years away – are you considering celebrating with a tattoo?
Some people don’t understand the interest in tattoos or wrestling, but if you’re not down with these D-Generation X tattoos, I’ve got two words for ya… SUCK IT!!!
