The Shockmaster had one of the most iconic professional wrestling debuts of all time, but for all the wrong reasons.
Clash of the Champions XXIV August, 1993 Daytona Beach, Florida, in front of a live audience and people watching at home, The Shockmaster (Fred Ottman, the uncle of Cody and Dustin Rhodes) was set to make his debut in World Championship Wrestling (WCW, or the WCW if you’re Bret Hart)
Davey Boy Smith stood with his back to the camera, blocking the audience’s view of a speaking Sting, but the terrible camera angle was soon overshadowed by what was about to occur. The set was made too well that as The Shockmaster went to storm through the wall, his foot got caught on a piece of the timber frame leading him to crash through to the floor, his helmet tumbling off in the process, and the rest is history.
If the shape of The Shockmaster’s helmet looks familiar it’s because it actually is a Star Wars Stormtrooper helmet, painted and covered in silver glitter. If you’ve ever done any arts and crafts project, you know that no matter how much you clean, you’ll never get rid of glitter, you’ll find pieces of it for years to come – it’s even more permanent than a tattoo.
It’s possible that the story of The Shockmaster’s debut will somehow manage to outlive glitter. Over 30 years later and still being talked about, today it’s for the right reasons due to this piece by @localcrewtattoo.
Unlike his failed debut, this tattoo is certainly a successful attempt at immortalising The Shockmaster.
