Created by Yuko Shimizu when working at Sanrio in 1974, Hello Kitty turned the big 5-0 this year!
Despite the characters’ cat-like appearance, Hello Kitty is actually a little British girl named Kitty White.
She first appeared on a coin purse in 1975, and after gaining popularity, Hello Kitty has gone on to feature in comics, an animated series, music, video games, and films.
