“What’s your favourite scary movie?” – a line popularised by the killers in Wes Craven’s 1996 film, Scream. The movie is considered by many to have revitalised the horror genre in the ’90s.
Scream challenged traditional horror movie tropes – it was smart and treated both the characters and audience as such. Moving away from the formulaic nature of much of the horror films produced before it, in Scream the terror became real.
Aside from the slasher nature of Scream, there’s long list of sub-genres which fall under the umbrella of horror; there’s supernatural, slasher, thriller, sci-fi, gore, home invasion, found footage, torture, paranormal, and a long list of others.
While I’ve covered a considerable number so far on TTA, I have only scratched the surface. There’s an ever-growing number of movies planned for future lists; it’s a category which I’ll continue to expand as I discover pieces inspired by more obscure films and ones featuring imagery from more recent releases.
