Practical Magic was released in the US just weeks prior to Halloween 1998. Critics gave mixed reviews in part due to the number of genres explored within Practical Magic. Combining crime, supernatural fantasy, drama, romantic comedy, domestic abuse in a cauldron did not result in the correct potion for filmmaking for many of them.
Starring two of the biggest names in Hollywood, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, and a further two legends, Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing, the film failed to recoup its budget at the box office. It certainly wasn’t the worst thing to come out of October that year – if you’re a wrestling fan and have watched Halloween Havoc 1998, you know what I mean
The Owens family were first introduced in Alice Hoffman’s 1995 book Practical Magic before hitting the big screen. Hoffman herself revisited her witchy cast of characters after a considerable break, with two sequels published in 2017 and 2020, and one sequel in 2021, The Book of Magic which will serve as the basis for the 2026 film.
The cinematic sequel will see one of the original co-writers, Akiva Goldsman, return and he’ll hopefully work his magic once again on the screenplay.
With all the prequel and sequel movies, along with all the reboots of franchises, it often does feel as though Hollywood run out of ideas. The Practical Magic sequel is set for release in September of next year. I can’t judge what I have not yet seen, but I do very much love the original movie which inspired these beautiful pieces.
