The original Elf script was written by David Berenbaum over 30 years, with the likes of Jim Carrey and the late Chris Farley considered for the leading role. Almost a decade later and with script rewrites and cast changes, Will Ferrell hit the big screen in 2003 as Buddy in this now Christmas classic, starring alongside Zooey Deschanel, James Caan (Misery), and Mary Steenburgen (Step Brothers).
Elf was one of Ferrell’s first movies following his departure from Saturday Night Live and the beginning of his early 2000’s domination at the box office in the comedy genre.
The movie is a fantastical tale of a baby at an orphanage finding its way onto Santa’s sleigh and growing up believing themselves to be an elf. After learning the truth as an adult, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his father. He’s a stranger in a strange land where hilarity ensues. Elf’s overarching themes of love, acceptance, and the joy of the holiday season are why it has become so nostalgic and watched by millions every Christmas.
Following the success and love for Elf, a musical inspired by the film opened on Broadway in 2010, and the stop-motion production, Elf: Buddy’s Christmas Musical aired on NBC in 2014.
