The platypus is a native Australian animal so strange in appearance that, as recent as 1799, actual scientists believed a preserved platypus to be a hoax. The late Robin Williams even had a joke about the platypus in his Little Creatures comedy special.

The animal emblem of the Australian state of New South Wales, the platypus is one of only five species of monotremes (egg-laying mammal) in the world.

An elusive Australian animal, platypuses reside in streams and rivers along the east of Australia. Although, unlike kangaroos, various bird species, possums, and even koalas, it is unlikely for even the majority of the Australian population to ever see a platypus in the wild.

Don’t be fooled by its cute exterior, the male platypus is a venomous mammal with a spur on its foot which causes pain to humans, much like the tattooing process.
