Also called Fondant Fancies, French Fancies are another classic British baked good. The sweet treats contain a square of sponge cake, topped with a hemisphere of buttercream and then coated with fondant icing.
The name of French Fancies is inspired by the French petit fours, a small bite-sized appetizer, in this case cake.
Upon Mr Kipling’s launch in 1967, French Fancies were one of 20 cake varieties made available. Other supermarket (and I assume some bakeries?) do their own version of French Fancies. There was also a time when giant French Fancies were sold.
